Questions to Ask BEFORE Getting Eyelash Extensions

So, you’re thinking about getting eyelash extensions. Of course, the idea of rolling out of bed every day with long, luxurious lashes ready for anything, no mascara required, is undeniably appealing. But there’s more to it than strolling into a salon and out an hour later with the lashes of your dreams. You want to make sure that your lash artist is going to be able to accomplish the right look that you’re going for and take good care of your eyes while she’s at it. Here’s a couple of good questions to ask your artist before you get your first set of lash extensions.

 Get to know your artist

1.     Where did you receive your lash training?

It’s important that your lash artist has been trained in a professional setting. Sometimes, lash artists who don’t have an instructor’s license offer training services, but these people aren’t getting properly trained. Make sure your artist has been trained by someone qualified and knows what they’re doing.

2.     How long have you been doing lashes?

It’s perfectly fine for someone to be a beginner but this might be something you want to know upfront. When getting lashes for the first time, you probably won’t know what to look for and might want to look for a more experienced artist who can guide you through the process better.

 Learn about the materials

3.     What are the ingredients in the adhesive you use?

Your lash artist should be familiar with the ingredients in the their adhesive and what they do. If your artist doesn’t know what they’re putting in very close proximity to your eye, that should be a red flag. Try to find an artist who uses glues made with butylcyanoacrylate and octylcyanoacrylate instead of a formaldehyde based glue which can cause major eye irritation.

4.     What type of lashes do you use?

The lash extensions should be soft, flexible, and light so as not to cause eye irritation or be too heavy on the eyelid. Lash extensions that aren’t compatible with your natural lashes, like being too thick or long, can cause damage to your natural lashes. Choosing the right, high quality lashes can make all the difference in your overall satisfaction with your extensions.

 Find your style

5.     What kind of extensions should I get?

Your lash artist will be happy to help you find the right look for you. If you’re going for a more natural look, they might suggest a classic set of extensions. If you want your extensions to stand out a little more, a volume set might be for you. Going to an artist trained in multiple styles will give you more options for the look you’re going for.

Understand your new lashes

6.     How can I make my extensions last as long as possible?

If your lash artist knows what she’s doing, she will have a good amount of information to share with you on how to care for your lashes. Keeping them clean is very important and you’ll want to ask about what kind of products to use or not use on your face and eyes with your new extensions. Water can break down the adhesive within the first 24 hours so its common for the artist to suggest keeping them dry that long. But if they recommend never getting them wet, that might be another red flag. Stay away from oils near the lashes and don’t use makeup that is difficult to remove, like waterproof mascaras. It’s also very important to brush the lashes in the morning and evening and after you shower to keep them from getting tangled. Aftercare is extremely important to keep your lashes in good shape between fills.

7.     How often should I get fills?

Everyone is different and depending on the style that you’re going for and your natural lashes, some extensions might last longer for some people than others. Talk to your artist about how often fills will be necessary to maintain your look.
